About NanoSWIM — Clean Water, Without Compromise
NanoSWIM AS is a Norwegian water technology company based in Bergen. We build nanobubble systems that treat water with physics instead of chemistry — for swimming pools, hotels and public aquatic facilities, for wellboats through our own marine product line, and, through our sister company, for other industrial and aquaculture uses.
Who we are
We are a small engineering-led company in Bergen, on the west coast of Norway, working on one narrow problem: how to get gas into water efficiently enough that you no longer need to pour chemicals into it.
Bergen is a reasonable place to do that work. Norway has some of the cleanest water in Europe and some of the strictest expectations about what may be added to it, an aquaculture industry that has spent decades taking dissolved oxygen seriously, and a marine research community that treats water quality as a discipline rather than a product category. All of that sets a useful standard for a water technology company operating out of Bergen, Norway.
What we are not is a large organisation. When you contact us you reach the people who size the system, and if something goes wrong on site you speak to someone who knows your installation. For most of our customers that is the point.
The newest part of that work is a marine line for wellboats: the ABAN-20 module, which oxygenates the wells while fish are on board, and the ARVAND-O3 skid, which is designed to disinfect the empty wells and piping between assignments. We have built and lab-tested a prototype, and we offer the wellboat systems to operators through a pilot programme — not as equipment with a fleet track record behind it. What each system does, and what is still to be proven on board, is set out on wellboat solutions.
Our mission
Replace harsh chemistry with efficient physics wherever the physics is genuinely good enough — and say so plainly where it is not.
That second half matters as much as the first. A chemical free water treatment company that pretends chlorine has no merit is not being honest with you: chlorine is cheap, effective and extremely well understood, and Norwegian rules for public pools are built around keeping a measurable residual in the basin. What nanobubbles change is how much chemistry you need to reach the same result, and what the water is like to swim in once you get there. We would rather sell fewer systems into the right facilities than more systems into the wrong ones.
The team
Three people carry the technical responsibility for what this site claims. Their roles and backgrounds are listed below as they are — no stock photography, nothing added.
- Prof. Thorolf Magnesen — Co-founder and CEO. Professor of marine biology at the University of Bergen (UiB), with more than 30 years in aquaculture.
- Dr. Behnood Sjåstad Fathi — Founder and CTO. PDEng in environmental engineering. Specialist in water chemistry and water quality, with a background in water treatment, RAS and aquaculture.
- Prof. Hossein Ahmadi — R&D manager. Professor in chemistry and membrane technology.
Between them that covers the questions a buyer should put to any water treatment supplier: what the treatment does to the water chemistry, what it means for the fish or the people in the water, and how the process was developed and tested. There is no separate sales layer. The people who answer those questions are the people you meet during a demo, a site visit or, for a wellboat operator, a vessel assessment.
If it matters to you who stands behind the technical claims on this site, and it should, the best test is still to meet us and put the hard questions directly.
Prefer to judge the work first? Start with our technology for the science and our internal measurements, and our references for documented results from real installations.
What drives us
Four things shape most of the decisions we make, and they are worth stating because they occasionally cost us a sale.
- Sustainability that shows up on an invoice. Cutting chemical purchasing and transport is good for a facility’s environmental reporting, but it also has to survive a finance director reading the five-year cost. If it does not, it is not a real saving.
- Engineering before marketing. Gas transfer either works at your flow rate or it does not. We would rather run the calculation against your volume and turnover rate than describe the result with adjectives.
- Health and safety of the people in the water. Bathers with sensitive skin, eczema or asthma notice the difference first, and so do instructors and lifeguards who spend their working day at the water’s edge. Air quality in an indoor hall is an occupational health question, not a comfort feature.
- Partnership over transactions. A water treatment system is a ten-year relationship with a facility. We are not interested in the version of this business where the relationship ends at commissioning.
NanoSWIM and NanoMAR
The same core nanobubble technology serves two very different markets, so it is run by two companies. NanoSWIM covers swimming pools and aquatic facilities. Our sister company NanoMAR covers the industrial and aquaculture side — process water, wastewater and dissolved-oxygen work in fish farming. The one exception is the marine line for wellboats described above, which NanoSWIM offers directly: see wellboat solutions.
The split is practical rather than corporate. A municipal swimming hall and a salmon farm need the same physics and completely different expertise, documentation and service models. Keeping them separate means each side is answered by people who actually work in that field. If your enquiry belongs on the other side of the line we will say so and introduce you rather than stretching to cover it.
NanoSWIM in numbers
The figures at the top of this page are the ones we publish, and they deserve a sentence of context each, because numbers without conditions are marketing.
The chemical reduction figure is measured against conventional chlorine dosing on comparable pools; what your facility achieves depends on bather load, water temperature and how the plant is operated. The pathogen reduction figure describes oxidative disinfection in the treatment loop, not the basin. The customer and country figures cover pools, hospitality, industry and aquaculture together, directly and through partners. Where we have documented a specific installation in detail, the full case is published under our references rather than compressed into a percentage on a homepage.
Company details
NanoSWIM AS, Langenesvegen 34, 5258 Blomsterdalen, Bergen, Norway. The website is nanoswim.no. As a registered Norwegian limited company we appear in the Brønnøysund Register Centre, and our organisation number is on any quotation, invoice or tender response we issue — ask for it directly if you need it before that point, and please verify it there rather than taking a website’s word for it.
The technology is patent pending: UK patent application GB2507053.3, “Method and apparatus for water cleaning”, filed on 8 May 2025 and owned by NanoSWIM AS. That is an application, not a granted patent.
Want to work with us?
If you operate a pool or a facility, the useful first step is a conversation about your actual water: volume, turnover rate, what you currently spend on chemicals, and whether the pool is indoors. We will tell you honestly whether this is worth pursuing.
If you are a distributor, installer or consulting engineer, we work with partners in markets where we cannot provide direct service ourselves, and we would rather have one well-supported partner in a country than five unsupported ones.
Get in touch and tell us which of those you are. Either way you will get an answer from someone who knows the technology, not a form response.

Come and meet the people behind the technology
A demo, a site visit or a vessel assessment puts you in the room with the people who would size and commission your system. It is the most direct way to judge a supplier.
